Prevention Services

Community Outreach

Outreach is a community-level intervention that occurs on the streets and/or in community settings. It involves conducting an in-depth assessment of a community including high-risk areas, current services, locations where high-risk individuals congregate, and meeting and connecting with residents.

Goals

  • To develop on-going relationships with target areas residents/visitors to provide information and referrals that will promote healthy behaviors and reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV and other STI’s
  • To connect agencies providing services to residents that need them
  • To develop collaborations with other HIV providers and other social service agencies to establish holistic referral networks

Acadiana CARES conducts Community Outreach during non-traditional hours (after 3 PM) in areas that have high prevalence of HIV and other STI’s. Outreach Teams provide prevention literature, condoms (male and female), bleach kits, and referrals to community resources, such as HIV testing, STI screens, and social service support.
